Poison on a Platter
Rajen Kumar
November, 2019

International fast food conglomerates have been undauntedly indulging in blatant promotion of hazardous food habits by selling high-sugary aerated drinks as an integral part of their basic products - pizza, burgers, French fries and other fast food fried products.

Consuming fried foods rich in trans fats with aerated chilled aerated drinks give rise to extremely harmful effects. “These global giants are playing with the health of especially the younger generation turning them addicts to the lethal combination of fast fried food and aerated sweetened drinks. They sell their fast food with a choice of cold drinks like Pepsi and Coke as a compulsive combination”, Dr. Yashpal Arora, a family physician, opines and is quick to add, “Even our traditional system of medicine (Ayurveda) prohibits drinking water immediately after food.”

Restaurants and takeaway chains frying foods in vegetable oil rich in trans fats invariably increase risk of heart disease. They increase your 'bad' cholesterol (LDL) and decrease 'good' cholesterol (HDL). Most of these foods are consumed more often by children and other vulnerable populations.

A worried mother disturbingly expresses her agony, “every time my son aged 10 takes his food, he insists for coke. It seems he has developed this habit from the fast food giants. I am worried how to manage this dangerous situation. I am worried about his health.”

Drinking a sugar-sweetened drink with a high-protein meal primes your body to store more fat, according to a study. Researchers found that sugary drinks decrease fat oxidation, the process that begins the breakdown of fat molecules. The more protein in the meal, the more fat oxidation decreases.

Children's 'induced' obsession for fast-food with cold drinks is worryingly increasing even as the authorities concerned with the health of the teeming millions especially the grown up children are keeping an unexplainable silence. Meanwhile, fast food giants are making hay playing with the lives of people by offering 'poison' on a platter.
